Other Valuable Information:

This owner’s manual includes important safety guidelines and maintenance instructions. Failure to read, understand, and follow instructions may lead to serious injury or even death.

To properly maintenance and extend the life of your HillBarrow we highly recommend that you add adequate amounts of chain oil to drive chain each and every month depending on the amount of use. If using daily or commercially, we recommend a light oil lubrication to chain within every 15-30 days. If used in extreme environments involving sand, dirt, dust, and water, cleaning and servicing immediately thereafter is highly demanded and recommended for maximum long-term efficiency and overall life of the product.

In the event an issue arises in relation to a failed part that is directly related-to and connects to the drive-chain and rust is clearly visible due to obvious neglect to oiling the drive-chain your warranty will be voided. By oiling the drive-chain not only protects and oils the chain itself, but also oils the cogs and the motor in which all are critical components that keep the remaining parts working properly without additional strain. If the drive-chain is not oiled it puts added stresses on all other parts that work with and coincide with the chain, cogs, and motor, therefore if rust is clearly visible on chain and cogs, the entire warranty will be voided to due the stresses that are trickled down and relayed to ALL other parts, including ANY and ALL electrical parts surrounding and working with the chain, cogs, and motor that makes the HillBarrow continue to function properly in it's entirety.

***Always be certain to turn the power switch to the "OFF" position before servicing in ANY way. We also highly recommend without question the complete disconnection of the batteries from motor entirely for added safety. This is simply done by pulling the "orange" quick connect apart in the opposite direction.

**Think Safety 1st!**

Please read the following Safety Disclaimers, Maintenance Instructions, & Additional Operating Instructions BEFORE Operating Your HillBarrow

» This product is intended for use by responsible adults with experience in operating motorized equipment safely. We highly recommend those under the age of 18 adhere to close adult supervision. No adult is immune to serious injuries or even death that can occur when operating power tools with powerful motorized capabilities. American Pride Technologies LLC, like many other motorized tool companies, cannot be held responsible for underage or irresponsible use. Treat this powerful tool as if it were a powerful chainsaw, and if used improperly it could cause serious injuries in many more ways than one if not experienced and/or using irresponsibly or abusively.

» Always load HillBarrow tray within a weight range that match and coincide with your realistic physical capabilities in regards to having to balance and turn the load safely.

DO NOT OVERLOAD WITH A WEIGHT YOU CAN NOT HANDLE!

Just because it has a motorized system that will surely assist you with pulling any load, one must still consider that he/or she MUST be able to handle, turn, and maneuver the load safely. Never operate this product at a speed which is too fast for your skills, experience, &/or your mental and physical strength. Always use at lowest speed possible under ANY and ALL circumstances, while also avoiding using in accumulating water whenever possible. We also recommend trying to avoid extremely dusty environments. Such environments are hard on any form of mechanical machinery. One should air blow these debris off immediately after use, wash lightly, while oiling the chain conservatively thereafter for necessary and added protection.

» This product is not in any way intended, designed, or licensed for roadway use nor intended to haul any person(s) of any size in ANY wheelbarrow Load Tray. By purchasing this product and by agreeing to this agreement, you are agreeing to use this product at your own risk.

Never operate this product without proper training or instructions.

*Any person under 18 years old should never operate this product. Operator age does NOT necessarily mean that they are qualified to operate this product. A parent should never allow this product to be used by an individual not having the ability, coordination, maturity, skills, and strength to operate it safely and in a controlled manner.

Never modify this product through improper installation, modification of existing parts, or by the use of non-authorized accessories. This product is ONLY designed for 6 cubic foot, metal load tray style wheelbarrows. Any altercation or modification to the product in ANY way WILL result in denied warranty claims.

*This product is designed to be used by only one person at a time. Never carry passengers in your load tray or allow more than one person to use this product at a time. We also recommend the wearing of knee pads, elbow pads, eye protection (goggles or face shield), gloves, & boots. Never operate this product barefoot or in sandals as this will increase the risk of injury, loss of limb, or possibly death.

*Always keep both hands on the handlebars (hand grips) at ALL times during operation.

*Always move slowly and pay extra attention when operating on unfamiliar terrain. Always be alert to changing terrain conditions or random debris ahead when operating this product.  Avoid sudden stops, jerks, or twists in body movement that has commonly lead to back & neck injury.

*Never operate the HillBarrow on excessively rough, slippery, muddy, loose, or hole stricken terrain. If you must, please use common sense & lighten the load below your normal hauling weight to be safe rather than sorry. Operator must clearly understand that when you’re dealing with weight & power you should immediately focus on safety with every step one takes and every type of terrain you choose to travel on.

The Motorized Load Assistance HillBarrow attachment was designed to greatly assist rather than entirely pull your load, keeping in mind its not magical its mechanical. With that in mind, haul what you could safely handle and control before the motorized assistance & you & your HillBarrow will be able to work together and complete many projects safely with less fatigue for many years to come.

Practice using your HillBarrow at a low speed 1st and foremost until said operator gets entirely familiar to the HillBarrow’s motorized feature(s). Do not turn the speed dial “up” to an excessive, unsafe speed. Doing such WILL surely increase the risk of injury or possibly death, while dramatically decreasing your reaction time if an unforeseen event or obstacle would spontaneously arise.

*Always check for obstacles before operating in a new area. Although the HillBarrow was designed to assist over obstacles, such as small rocks, limbs, curbs, or other debris; extreme caution must be considered as it pertains to the potential for substantial loss of control. Going up or down steep terrains, or attempting to roll over ANY debris is a risk that you as the purchaser(s) and/or operator(s) is liable and responsible for. American Pride Technologies cannot be held reliable or responsible for irresponsible judgments or actions executed by one’s own “Free-Will” thereof.

*Do not operate the HillBarrow with headphones. Headphones & many other handheld type devices mask out voices or other warnings that could pre-inform the operator of a potential threat or hazard ahead or from any other direction.

*Do not do stunts, jumps, or any other type of dangerous uses that may cause bodily harm. Do NOT risk damaging the HillBarrow and the voiding of said warranty due to extreme abuses. Such irresponsible acts will result in a higher risk of injury(s) and could possibly result in death.

*Do not lean, lift, tilt, or turn the HillBarrow in either direction too excessively, too abruptly, or too sharply at any time or at any speed for this may cause a weight shift and/or allow parts of your “Wheelbarrow” to contact with the ground. As a direct result you may lose control, spill load, obtain injury(s), death, &/or inflict damage to the HillBarrow assembly. This especially pertains to any downhill transport, as you are naturally and instinctively persuaded to lift the handles up higher; in which the support frame enclosing the main wheelbarrow wheel may contact ground and cause and extreme abrupt stop. Practice keeping the handles of your wheelbarrow as low to the ground as possible to prevent the front wheelbarrow frame from ever contacting with ground. NEVER attempt to touch the motor or battery assemblies during or immediately after operation as they can and will become hot from previous operation.

Extreme Water Could Possibly Damage HillBarrow Electrical System(s).

Never immerse this product in water, never spray control box/panel with any direct water pressure, and never leave out in the rain and cold as the electrical system(s) could be compromised by the unintentional inviting of rust formation on electrical components. Rust formation is a clear sign of neglect and abuse whether inspecting inside the battery box or the chain and cog(s) that drive the HillBarrow's drive-wheel. If one must operate in or near wet conditions or where water is a factor, store in a dry environment and then wipe dry to the best of your ability immediately thereafter. This will maintain and protect all components to the best of your ability and ensure prolonged life of the over-all product.

Battery Charger

*The charger and charger port should be regularly inspected for damage (cord, plug, enclosure, etc.). If damage is found stop using the charger until it can be repaired or replaced.

*The charger is not a toy and should be kept out of reach of children at ALL times.

*Always disconnect the charger from the wall outlet and the charger port on the HillBarrow when not using it.*Do not charge your battery for more than 24 hours continuously.

Battery Care

Proper maintenance of batteries will maximize their lifespan and capacity. The American Pride Technologies Company warranties your new batteries from the date of purchase only if properly cared for—refer to the limited warranty for details. SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) batteries are used in the HillBarrow. This is a very user-friendly type of battery when cared for properly. Never leave in the batteries in the direct cold or hot temperatures cause like a car battery it will drain the battery and American Pride Technologies cannot be held responsible.

Care

Even with proper care, rechargeable batteries do not last forever. Every time the battery is discharged and subsequently recharged, its relative capacity decreases by a small percentage. You can maximize the life of your battery by following the instructions in this guide.

- Batteries should be fully charged immediately when they are received for the full recommended charge times. HillBarrow recommended charge time: 4-6 hours
- Never charge batteries for longer than 24 hours continuously.
- Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (ni-cad, ni-mh, etc.) batteries.
- SLA batteries do not have a “memory.” Partial discharge/charge cycles will not harm the batteries’ capacity or performance.
- The rated output capacity of a battery is measured at 77°F (25°C). Any variation in this temperature will alter the performance of the battery, and shorten its expected life. High and low temperatures especially reduce overall battery life & run time.
- Always be sure to turn the main HillBarrow power switch to “OFF” after each use. If you leave the power switch in the “ON” position, or your product has not been charged for a long period of time, the batteries may reach a stage at which they will no longer hold a charge.
- Be friendly to the environment! Be sure to recycle your old batteries at a local battery-recycling center. Do not throw them in the garbage! Check www.call2recycle.org for more information on free battery drop-off locations.

Storage

When storing your batteries for a long period of time (longer than 30 days):

- Charge your batteries every 90 days to avoid capacity loss. Batteries slowly self-discharge when left unused for a long period of time; if the battery cells are allowed to reach a critically low voltage, their lifespan and capacity will be permanently reduced.
- Always disconnect your charger from the wall outlet and battery before storing the battery.
- Avoid storing your batteries in extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold.
- Batteries are best kept in a cool, dry place. Do not allow batteries to accumulate condensation, as this could cause shorting or corrosion.
- The recommended storage temperature for both SLA and Li-Ion batteries is between 32-77 °F (0-25°C).
- Avoid exposing the battery to extreme heat (104°F (40°C) or higher) for long periods of time.

Battery FAQ:

Q: Do I need to “break-in” my batteries?
A: Yes, it is recommended that you perform a “break-in” cycle consisting of ~ three discharge/charge cycles to allow your batteries to reach optimum performance. This involves three complete discharges and three complete recharges. After this initial “break-in” cycle the batteries will have maximum possible performance and less line voltage fluctuations under load.

Q: Is it normal that the batteries get warm when recharging?
A: Yes, it is normal that the batteries will become warm to the touch during the recharging process. This is because the increase of internal resistance and lower energy conversion efficiency from electric energy to chemical energy.

Q: How long will my batteries last before needing replacement?
A: Average battery life depends on use and conditions. Even with proper care, rechargeable batteries do not last forever. Conservatively, an SLA battery will come to the end of its useful life after ~200-300 full discharge/charge cycles. A partial charge/discharge counts fractionally against those numbers; running the battery down halfway then recharging it completely uses up one half of a charge cycle. “End of useful life” refers to the point at which a battery can no longer supply 80% of its original rated capacity in ampere-hours. After this point, the aging process will accelerate and the battery will need to be replaced.

Plug the battery charger into a wall outlet, then into the charger port near the battery. The indicator light on the face of the charger will turn red, showing that charging has started. When charging is complete, the indicator light will turn green. A full charge will take 4-6 hours, however if the battery is not empty charging may take much less time. Always unplug the charger after use. Always store the HillBarrow with the power switched turned "OFF".

Regularly checking your HillBarrow and performing maintenance will greatly extend its useful life, and ensure your HillBarrow remains safe to operate. Before each use, make sure that you....

...clean the drive chain and lubricate it periodically with a light drop of oil or two....check the drive chain for broken or damaged links....inspect the frame, especially for cracks or signs of wear

Motor will not Function

- Charge battery for the full recommended time (4-6 hours)
- Check connections from the motor area to the battery box area located on the under-side of battery box that connect. This will include the motor to battery box connection and the connections that run from the motor assembly to the push-button thumb throttle as well.

Motor suddenly stops working during use

Check the 20-amp black safety breaker located on the face of the control panel. This safety breaker is designed to directly protect the batteries from any type of overheating and malfunction. If applicable, press the 20 Amp safety button to re-activate the HillBarrow’s power.

Your HillBarrow is also equipped with an internal controller that includes a back-up safety feature that is designed to directly monitor, protect, and prolong the life of ALL components in more ways than one as well. If it were to have engaged, you would know so by holding in the throttle button. If you hear a clicking sound, that is a clear indication that your HillBarrow is attempting a safe re-start effort every one second. If this is determined to be the case, we advise letting the components cool down adequately, especially if it’s been operating under extreme working conditions &/or prolonged heat for a long period of time.

Either of the two breakers’ likelihood of engaging will depend entirely on how you choose to use your HillBarrow. If your assisting your HillBarrow up huge hills with a heavy load it will surely assist you to the top over and over again; but if you go too long without assisting it under extreme working conditions, (excessive heat, steep inclines, heavy loads), your HillBarrow may very well let you know by enacting a “Safety Shut-down” if the conditions continue for too long.

Only runs for a short period of time and abrupt battery loss is recognized on battery meter:

Your battery may have aged past its useful life. If under warranty, please contact us for servicing solutions or for the purchase of new batteries. See the Battery Care section of this manual for more details.
